Undercover Investigation Leads To Tyson Foods Facing 33 Counts Of Animal Cruelty
Mercy For Animals finds animal abuse in undercover investigation of the food giant’s facilities.
Tyson Foods and six slaughterhouse workers will face 33 counts of animal cruelty in Mississippi after a Mercy For Animals (MFA) undercover investigation revealed heads being ripped off live chickens, the breaking of the animals’ legs and wings, and ineffective stunning methods resulting in slow, painful deaths. The third MFA investigation of a Tyson facility released since July was recorded in a Mississippi slaughterhouse, one of the largest in the world, where 2.5 million chickens are slaughtered every week. “This is horrific animal abuse no company with morals should support,” MFA president Nathan Runkle said. “Tyson Foods has not only the power, but also the ethical responsibility to end the worst forms of cruelty to animals in its supply chain.” Tyson is the largest meat producer in the world and a major chicken supplier for McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King, Chik-Fil-A, Popeyes, and more. Chickens make up 95 percent of animals killed for food in the US and are not covered by the federal Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.
