Cowspiracy Makers Raise Enough Money To Qualify For The Oscars
Cowspiracy’s Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn raise more than $235K in crowdfunding campaign for their new film, What the Health.
Cowspiracy filmmakers Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn have raised $235,682—more than four times their goal—on crowdfunding site Indiegogo for their new medical industry documentary What the Health. The documentarians used the extra funds to translate the film into Mandarin in order to expand their reach to one billion potential viewers, and hopes that the additional funding “gives us the necessary resources to qualify for the Oscars.” According to filmmaker Hunter Weeks, current rules for qualifying a documentary for the Oscars present financial barriers of up to $25,000 because producers must be able to show the film for seven consecutive days in theaters in both Los Angeles and Manhattan, receive a critical review in either The Los Angeles Times or The New York Times, advertise in two major newspapers in both cities, and send 300 unmarked DVDs to the academy. Cowspiracy has been credited for inspiring many to consider going vegan—such as the owners of Texas restaurant La Blue Casa—and with current funding and a potential Oscar nomination, What the Health is slated to do the same.
